Thomas Marshall was a bright, lively, popular and giving teenager from Orford who tragically died in a road accident on the outskirts of the village in the summer of 2009 just before his A level examination results arrived that would have seen him going on to University.
His funeral in Orford Church was attended by hundreds of friends of Thomas and his parents. The church collection raised an amazing amount of money and his parents decided that his tragic death should become the catalyst to set up the Thomas Marshall Education Fund with the aim of supporting secondary and tertiary education in Mozambique.
Thomas' parents Guy & Wendy Marshall originally supported Vila Maninga with money raised for 'Thomas' Fund'. As support grew and grew they, along with a group of friends, set up TMEF as an independent charity run by trustees.
Fundraising activities are organised throughout the year to generate income which is passed directly to Mozambique to support the aims of the fund. All trustees are unpaid volunteers and no expenses are taken from the fundraising except event costs.
Frikkie & Juanita de Jager put all our fundraising work into action in Mozambique.
They founded a community project in Vila Maninga in 1992, originally to care for orphans, destitute children and the elderly, run a Bible School, primary school and provide general upliftment for the community.
As the orphans had all graduated to secondary school and had to be placed in boarding school elsewhere the de Jagers in 2012, together with the community decided to convert the existing establishment into a technical school. The date for the completion for this operation and the handing over to the education department was planned for 2017 although the project was put under review until the political situation in Mozambique improves.
Frikkie & Juanita decided to retire after countless years of missionary work in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. We have been fortunate that they have discovered equally committed replacements in Francois & Alta Rauch.
Francois and Alta have settled into their new roles for us and send us regular reports on activities. Their first year was a hectic one for them with a lot of work and travelling. Communication was a challenge as always and spending time with the kids and following up on their progress took a great amount of their time.
We look forward to supporting their work.
